Electronic devices produce heat even when in good condition, it is an unavoidable characteristic. This heating effect is a direct result of charging/discharging and processing. This heating effect can be evident when you place your hands close to the air vent under your laptop. It is normal for gadgets to get hot, however, not so hot that it can burn your palms, as in a case of a smart phone.
As stated above, a little rise in temperature of an electronic device is normal, however, it doesn’t directly mean it is good. It’s an alarming event when your device gets extremely hot, it can also be irritating. When the heat generated by your device is from the battery, then it simply means one thing “your battery will not last long” heat really kills batteries fast.
A research carried out by Isidor Buchmann, CEO of battery-testing firm Cadex Electronics reveals that a lithium-ion battery will lose 15 percent of its total capacity when stored with a charge of 40 percent at a temperature of 104 degrees, however, the percentage loss will increase when stored with a full charge.
Why do Smartphones Get Hot?
Can anything be done about an overheating smartphone? We have identified the three main causes of device overheating.
• Poor signal
• Intense workload
• Battery charging
You can almost do nothing about poor signal as it is beyond your influence. A gadget can get over heated when so many processes are working in the background, not only does background processes causes over heating it, however, causes your device to perform functions with low speed making it hang. Start by minimizing the number of applications you run at a time, if the issue persists, try using a third party software. Even though you can’t see the vent of your mobile device, however, enclosing your smartphone in a case all day can result in overheating. Take it out time to time for heat control.
Some mobile phone manufacturers made their devices with the body as a heat sink to help control heat. Ensure good ventilation for your device if you want it to last. Remember, your battery is at risk when your device gets too hot.
Hot mobile phones are a risk to even the user, you might have seen written on the battery pack that “do not dispose of in fire” the reason for the warning is that, when batteries are disposed of in fire they explode as a result. So, when your smartphone generates a lot of heat you’re at risk, the battery might explode if the heat gets out of control. Most phone manufacturers produce devices with inbuilt and non-removable batteries, which means you can't take the battery out even if the device is hot.
Because some causes of overheating in gadgets cannot be controlled, manufacturers have made a provision for plan B. in case your phone gets hot to an extreme it tries to save itself by shutting down, so also other devices. In a case where your device gets too hot all the time, contact a qualified technician to help fix the problem.
